How to receive Fullbright Scholarship for Indian Students


Wondering how to afford funding to study in the United States? The Fulbright Scholarship program offers scholarships to approximately 8,000 deserving candidates every year, and the scholarship program is available in more than 160 countries around the world. Eligibility criteria, application procedure and grant amount vary from country to country. The prestigious Fulbright Scholarship is awarded by the “Biennial Fulbright Commission” or the US Embassy. The program offers the study cost of the applicants but at the same time, it is highly competitive. Fulbright Scholarship is one of the most attractive scholarship programs in the world. This scholarship promotes mutual understanding, supports, and a peaceful relation between the United States and the other countries. Fulbright-Nehru Masters Fellowships are designed for outstanding Indian students who want to pursue postgraduate degree programs at preferred US colleges. The Fulbright Scholarship offers a variety of degree programs to the US and non-US scholars. The programs provide grants to qualified Indian graduates who wish to further study in the United States under the Flagship Award. There are different scholarship programs for specific aspirants. Students can apply for a Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship, a Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral and Professional Research Fellowship, a Fulbright-Nehru CII Fellowship. The program offers Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant programs for teachers and students both, and Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Programs for Teachers. Even, it offers professional development programs for university administrators. Some essential points are given below to receive a Fulbright Scholarship: 

  • Candidate must be highly motivated.
  • Candidate should have leadership quality.
  • Candidate must have completed a bachelor’s degree program from a recognized Indian university obtaining 55% marks that equivalent to a US bachelor’s degree.
  • Candidate must possess minimum three-year work experience.
  • Candidate must not have registered for another US degree program.

How to apply:

Planning: Most scholarship applications process open fifteen months before the grant date and have four months submission deadline. So, it is advisable that an applicant should begin to collect all the required documents at least two years before the expected grant date.

Citizenship eligibility: All Indian students can apply for this scholarship. Indian nationals living in the United States cannot apply for a Fulbright grant. 

Language proficiency: Those students applying to study in a foreign country, they should be proficient in the English language and the native language of that particular country.

Application process:

  • Read the whole application instructions carefully.
  • Mention the applicant’s checklist before applying.
  • Submit the online application form.
  • Wait for the feedback from the Fulbright Scholarship authority.   

Fulbright Scholarship acceptance: Basically, the acceptance rate for a Fulbright scholarship is 20%, although it varies from year to year, by only a few percentage points. Every year a large number of applicants submit their application for getting the scholarship. The Fulbright Scholarship committee analyzes every application and then select the best candidates who are going to get the scholarship.
